G20 all about poverty and displacement say community organizers

Toronto – Members of the Toronto Community Mobilization Network launched their Days of Resistance (June 21-June24) at a Press Conference outside the newly established Alternative Media Centre (366 Harbord), calling for the G8/B20/G20 to be abolished for causing global poverty and
displacement.

“Nearly 239 million people are unemployed the world over” explains Maryam
Adrangi, a member of the Toronto Community Mobilization Network. “In 46
countries people are poorer today than in 1990. In 25 countries more
people are hungry today than a decade ago – these have been caused by the IMF and the World Bank who are members of the G20”.

The press conference was held at 336 Harbord where the Toronto Media Co-Op has established an Alternative Media Centre that will support independent journalists in reporting the impacts of G8/G20 and tactics used by resistance communities.

Jesse Rosenfeld of the Alternative Media Centre collective anounced "Our
Alternative Media Centre is now open, we're going to be covering the front
lines of actions and demonstrations, and investigating the issues at the
heart of the mobilizations that most mainstream media and governments are
unwilling to touch". To access up-to-date alternative news on the G8/G20,

“In 2005, the richest 500 people earned more than 416 million people”
exclaimed Syed Hussan speaking to the assembled media about global
poverty. “With the G7 countries producing most of the world’s weapons,
causing most of the wars, funding most of the industrial and environmental
havoc – the last decade has seen nearly 180 million people forced to
migrate”.

Adrangi and Hussan were speaking on issues of Income Equity and Community Control over Resources as well as Migrant Justice and War and Occupation.

“The G8/G20 have done little good and immense amount of harm – it is time
that power be taken up by communities that are creating real solutions”,
said Adrangi in response to a question.

“This week, we will see thousands gather from around the world to talk
about how real people are ending poverty and displacement – the G20 simply has no place in this discussion”, Hussan added.

An Anti-Poverty March is planned at 2pm, leaving from Allan Gardens.
